Two of my favorite subjects, the ocean and the city, come head to head: huge storm surf batters San Juan, Puerto Rico, in March 2008.

Wow, excellent photos! I would want to be far away from the beach if a big storm hit like that.

Fortunately the storm itself was far away in the ocean, and might even have been over by the time these waves hit Puerto Rico. The people in the lower left corner of the main photo don’t seem too concerned…

Yes, I can second that–the waves in New York Harbor actively delight in trying to overturn your kayak and drown you :-). But that’s what makes urban paddling such fun…

Yes, even the locals were amazed, and came out in droves to watch the waves:
They said that these waves were bigger than they had seen in any hurricane (which this wasn’t, even)…

They are actually sitting quite a bit above the water, on the old Spanish walls that have survived several centuries of assault by the ocean—so I think they are not too worried ;-)

Land and sea wins every time. I love your description in the first photo – “Irrisistable force meets immovable object!” Somehow I think if the fight goes for a while on the sea will win. Great entry.
