Ailsa of Where’s my backpack? has proposed another photo challenge—it looks like it’s going to be a regular weekly thing! This week her challenge is Street Markets.
I don’t have too many photos of street markets. Although I do remember photographing some wonderfully colorful ones in Germany, that was many years ago, and where are those photos now? But let it not be said that I didn’t rise to the challenge!
Here is a snapshot of the crowded pre-holiday market held last December in Manhattan’s Columbus Circle, at the edge of Central Park, taken at the magic hour of twilight…
And yes, I did travel to take this photo—from the East Side of Manhattan all the way to the West Side, from one culture to quite another.

I just KNEW you’d rise to the challenge, Vlad. You can’t beat the glow of holiday markets, it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy. I too have visited many wonderful Christmas markets in Germany and have not one single photo to show – I suspect it had something to do with the generous amounts of Glühwein I consumed :) I love this shot of Columbus Circle, and admire your intrepid journey from the East Side to the West Side. It brings back memories for me too… Unfortunately this particular market is not really a special Christmas market, like the ones in Europe. Still, that holiday feeling is already in the air…

About 10 years ago I was returning from the East Side on the 86th Street crosstown bus. Three girls, I am guessing 11 or 12 years old, were talking. The lead girl said to her friends in a voice rich in horror and the thrill of out-of-bounds behavior: “The other day I fell asleep on the bus and when i woke up I was on the West Side!” Her two friends clucked and cooed over her like she had lost toes climbing Everest, but had lived to tell the tale…

Yes, East Siders going to the West fear they might be eaten by ogres. West Siders going East just fear being bored.
This is uptown. Downtown the rules are different, of course.

This made me giggle, Vlad, you and Johna are East Siders, aren’t you? Being a West Sider myself, boredom is truly one of my biggest fears going East. Sort of like Johna’s experience rock gardening, only with East Siders instead of rocks. ;)

I love to visit Columbus Circle, but have never been there when there was a street market on. It looks great, especially in that light. ;)

It’s a pretty small market, and I think it’s only there on special occasions, such as before the holidays. But it’s not really a holiday market, but rather a somewhat upscale market with canvas stalls selling various trinkets, jewellery, glassware, clothing accessories, etc…

So I actually thought about kayaking when I was writing my post on rhythm, and about Johna’s post on rock gardening, the push and pull of wave dynamics. I was originally going to write just about music, but thought rhythm would be much more interesting. x
