Vladimir Brezina (RIP)
... kayaked the waters around New York for more than 15 years in his red Feathercraft folding kayak. He was originally from (the former) Czechoslovakia and lived in the U.K. and California before settling down in New York. He was a neuroscientist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He died in 2016.
Johna Till Johnson
... is a kayaker and technology researcher at Nemertes Research. She's an erstwhile engineer, particle physicist, and science fiction writer. She was born in California and has lived in Italy, Norway, Hawaii, and a few other places. She currently resides in New York City.

These are young mangroves, just getting started in the shallow water…

The mangroves are so interesting. They look like someone with a sense of humor just randomly placed them in the water. Great pics!

I thought they were weird the first time I saw them, too. But they are not at all unusual—to anyone on the Gulf coast of Florida and in the entire Caribbean (and probably many other tropical parts of the world), this will be quite a common sight…

And making new land! Kayaking in Florida, we were continually coming across entire islands that weren’t on the chart, where mangroves had established themselves since the chart had been made… :-)

It’s heartening to know that nature regenerates .. fights back, and the vital role mangroves play for both marine and land creatures.
