Ailsa‘s Travel-Themed Photo Challenge this week is Sunset.
I must have hundreds of sunset photos, since, with camera in hand, a spectacular show at sunset is hard to resist… Which to choose? Here are a few of the memorable sunsets over the years.
... kayaked the waters around New York for more than 15 years in his red Feathercraft folding kayak. He was originally from (the former) Czechoslovakia and lived in the U.K. and California before settling down in New York. He was a neuroscientist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He died in 2016.
... is a kayaker and technology researcher at Nemertes Research. She's an erstwhile engineer, particle physicist, and science fiction writer. She was born in California and has lived in Italy, Norway, Hawaii, and a few other places. She currently resides in New York City.

The first photo is from a day that we’ve yet to write up—watch this space! ;-) That is Johna, leading her boat from the place where we initially landed on the beach to the place where we decided to make camp…

Yes, that’s why Johna much prefers sunrise to sunset. I don’t mind sunset in the summer, or in the tropics, since the night is equally inviting, but in NYC in winter sunset is indeed a sad time of day…

Though it seemed from the circumnavigation files so far, it’s you who’re the early bird Vlad! Seriously, i agree – sunsets in a cold climate have an extra tinge of melancholy. :)

Well, it’s different when camping—I don’t have to get dressed and go anywhere, but just roll out of the tent and see the sunrise. And on the circumnavigation I kept waking up every couple of hours anyway, to make sure the rising tide wasn’t about to carry away the boats ;-)

I find myself unable to resist capturing just one more sunset. Watching the sun slide below the horizon is magical, isn’t it? Traces of the day burned onto the canvas, deep, broad swaths of color, never to be seen again.

Same here! I must have photos of hundreds of sunsets. And sunrise can be equally magical, although the show doesn’t last as long—and you have to get up early!

ABSOLUTELY STUNNING sunsets!! I was thinking of doing the travel theme thing myself this week. I got some amazing sunset shots on that recent Mono Lake trip. That would be great! I grew up in Downey and went to UC Irvine, also spent a LOT of time in San Diego…in fact, I’m eventually going to do a Pictorial Highlight on the OC/SD coast, because I have some lovely pictures from there!

Wonderful pictures! I especially like the one with the man and boat – the colors are amazing – and the last one. It looks as if it belongs on another planet – it’s amazing how much bigger the sun looks when there’s something to compare it to!

That last picture is a bit misleading. A side-by-side comparison would show that the sun is actually quite a bit bigger than all of New York City, however much we New Yorkers hate that idea… ;-)
