... kayaked the waters around New York for more than 15 years in his red Feathercraft folding kayak. He was originally from (the former) Czechoslovakia and lived in the U.K. and California before settling down in New York. He was a neuroscientist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He died in 2016.Johna Till Johnson
... is a kayaker and technology researcher at Nemertes Research. She's an erstwhile engineer, particle physicist, and science fiction writer. She was born in California and has lived in Italy, Norway, Hawaii, and a few other places. She currently resides in New York City.Recent Comments

The first photo looks like the crab is winding up to punch the gull in the beak. What an excellent slide show.

I have another photo (not included here because it’s out of focus) where the crab is putting up both his claws like a boxer… (different crab, different gull—gulls were capturing crabs all the time at that spot).

Fantastic, Vlad. It’s hard not to feel for the feisty little guy fighting for his life, but the slightly bigger guy does have to eat.

The Gulls down in Hastings a couple of weekends ago certainly weren’t afraid of humans – they were loitering with intent to pinch fries at every opportunity!

Unless the humans got too close, these gulls just ignored humans. They didn’t need to pinch food—they were sleek and satiated, having plenty of crabs to eat…
