Normally this is so, but these birds allowed themselves to be approached quite closely. The ones in Florida (spoonbill, heron, egret) were confident in their own territory, the ones in New Jersey (gulls) were used to humans, the rest (in NYC’s Central Park Zoo) were just bored…

That’s actually a good question. I called it a goose because that’s the first thing that came into mind, but it could also be some kind of swan. I guess I’ll have to go back there (the Central Park Zoo here in NYC) and this time write down the names of all the animals I photograph…

What a great set of images and a clever way to present them. Loved seeing the egret; when we lived in the Virginia Tidewater area, we saw them every day – so beautiful.

Great animal photos — but the added dimension of anthropomorphic expressions is just fabulous — it adds so much depth. This is what pulls us into the image and separates average images from the really memorable ones.

They are all gorgeous, and nicely captioned too. I can’t think of a fave – maybe the grumpy duck because sometimes I am just like that; the crab for being so foolishly brave ;-) ; and the squirrels, oh my! :)

Actually, there’s nothing that special about the camera (it’s a Nikon D80), but you do want to get in close with a telephoto lens (most of these photos were taken with a 300mm lens)…

Ahhh.. I think we had this discussion. I have a point and shoot and no telephoto.. but it inspires me to take it into consideration (again) on my next upgrade

Yes, I think we did have this discussion, and it is something to think about when you upgrade. I personally would find it hard to get really good closeups with a point-and-shoot (I know from experience with my Pentax Optio), although there are people who can do wonders with something that’s not much more sophisticated—see for example Cornel Apostol’s photos here…

Yeah I know.. I think I am still not ready for the next step. but wow.. amazing photos. By the end of next year before I go to Nepal i will make a decision… for now I love the ease of a basic camera but have envy every time I see the telephoto shots.
