... kayaked the waters around New York for more than 15 years in his red Feathercraft folding kayak. He was originally from (the former) Czechoslovakia and lived in the U.K. and California before settling down in New York. He was a neuroscientist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He died in 2016.Johna Till Johnson
... is a kayaker and technology researcher at Nemertes Research. She's an erstwhile engineer, particle physicist, and science fiction writer. She was born in California and has lived in Italy, Norway, Hawaii, and a few other places. She currently resides in New York City.Recent Comments

I love the swimmer shot…. where were you standing?

Not standing, but sitting… in a kayak, paddling along with the swimmer. The story is here.

Keeping a tiny plastic tube afloat AND taking photographs.
That is mighty impressive to a woman who tends to prefer imaginary rowing from the viewpoint of a sofa.

You left out the paddling part ;-)
Actually, the boat keeps itself afloat, and the paddling is not especially hard during these races since kayaks are intrinsically faster than swimmers, and you have to hold back to paddle at the swimmer’s pace. So it indeed is mostly a matter of just sitting there and taking photographs :-)

I particularly like the buoy; but better still is the crane barge and accompanying rubbish (?) – such a contrast with the frequent association of green with environmentalism.

Well, the rubbish was in fact metal being collected for recycling, so it’s a little ambiguous there…

Oh, these are very well done. I like how you chose pictures that highlight green rather than just have a lot of green in ’em. Excellent take on the theme. I’m not too sure which is my favorite…maybe the last one. The two black birds set off the green nicely.
