This was the sight today at 7 a.m. …
… and this at 5 p.m.
A nor’easter is on the way.
For the first time this winter, we might get some real snow. Finally! We are looking forward to it.
... kayaked the waters around New York for more than 15 years in his red Feathercraft folding kayak. He was originally from (the former) Czechoslovakia and lived in the U.K. and California before settling down in New York. He was a neuroscientist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He died in 2016.
... is a kayaker and technology researcher at Nemertes Research. She's an erstwhile engineer, particle physicist, and science fiction writer. She was born in California and has lived in Italy, Norway, Hawaii, and a few other places. She currently resides in New York City.

One of my favorite weather sayings, Vlad; I researched it as a kid and there are some scientific reasons why this is true. Hope you get the snow you want; I would be happy to share some of our snow with you :-)

I hope she made it! (I am writing this late Friday morning.) As is usual nowadays, the airlines preemptively canceled most flights already yesterday, trains are being canceled today… If the snow is as heavy as predicted, it will be chaos for the next few days…

Yes, thanks for asking, they are halfway home and so far so good. It seems as though there is not as much snow on the roads (yet) as predicted… Get some supplies in, put on your jammies, charge your phone and stay in! It is snowing here as well but that is nothing out of the ordinary…

The evening shot is amazing – the colour, the clouds … When I lived in Canada I remember thinking the snow seemed to make the cold bearable, especially when it came in time for the weekend – hope yours is magical :)

It actually often does seem to be less cold when it snows (all that snow insulation, etc.), at least in places where it isn’t that brutally cold to begin with…

Gorgeous pictures! I’m headed out east for a big conference in DC but luckily we won’t be getting the storm there but my friends who are from the northeast may have a difficult time getting there on time! But it sure is great to get a big old storm and lots of snow!

Thanks for asking! Actually, here in NYC the storm is over and it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary—just a few inches of snow in Central Park. We seem to have been at the southern edge of the storm, and so got off easy compared to further north…

I remember—just barely from babyhood in Nassau County—the blizzard of 1947, when New York got 26 inches of snow. It may have inconvenienced people, but not children. Let’s see what you grownup children get 65 years later.

I seem to remember a couple of storms of around 20 inches in NYC in the past decade… but nothing in comparison with the great storms of the past, like the Great Blizzard of 1888 that dropped around 40 inches of snow on NYC:

Yes! Basically unregulated construction—you see similar things in photos of cities in some parts of the world today…
Many of the wires came down under the weight of the snow in 1888, and, according to Wikipedia, “following the storm, New York began placing its telegraph and telephone infrastructure underground to prevent their destruction.”

LOL, as soon as I saw your title-I said aloud, “sailors take warning.” My dad used that saying often when I was a child. I hope you guys stay warm and enjoy the beauty of the snow. Maybe kayaks can be used as sleds too? :)
