This week’s Photo Challenge is Lunchtime.
When lunchtime rolls around, we’ve already been paddling for hours—and we are starving!
Sometimes we land. Over the years, we’ve had lunch in many memorable, picturesque spots—
But often it’s just not convenient to land. We have our lunch on the water—
And in winter we really don’t want to get out of our boats at all. We raft up for a few minutes in the lee of a convenient windbreak—on a Manhattan circumnavigation, we head for our favorite barge off Randall’s Island—for some hot tea and salami and cheese—
And let me tell you, it tastes damn good under the circumstances!

I have found that these types of lunches are very memorable. When we travel we much prefer our packed lunches of yogurt, cheese, crackers, vegis and fruit then stopping for fast food. Our outings are on dry land but we have also found those wonderful spots. I felt like I was having lunch with you. ;)

Better not mention fast food… If we were to see a convenient fast food establishment next to the water, with a low dock, we would certainly not be above going for it… fortunately, they are few and far between on our paddles…

There’s nothing like some strenuous exercise to make it all taste really really good! Your model looks like she got a bit impatient with all the pictures in a few of the frames! You better make sure to eat first or she won’t leave you any by the time you’re done taking her picture (oh, hi Johna!).

HI Nancy! I wasn’t so much impatient as thinking, “Vlad, are you taking another photo of me with my mouth full AGAIN!!!!?” But you’re right, the reason there are no photos of Vlad is because I am usually in a hurry to get to the food…. I’ll have to rectify that!

If Vlad’s not careful, there won’t BE any lunch left by the time he puts the camera down! I do enjoy though that he puts you in the pictures. My husband doesn’t mind, but my daughter is not as good about it.

I’m too nice for that… maybe that’s my problem! But then, if I stopped waiting to eat until he’d finished taking photos, there might be fewer of them… :-)

Lovely scenery for lunch on the go. And there is the ubiquitous green chair! Amazing how that particular design has got around the world.

Vlad calls them “dictator chairs” because you always see them in the photos of those Latin American or African dictators. You know the photos I mean: the guy wearing the military-style jacket with the epaulets sitting in the chair with armed guards wearing mirrored sunglasses on either side…

Well, you could almost get it into a Feathercraft… ;-)
Actually, we find these “dictator” chairs all along the water’s edge around here, usually in the spots with the best view—on the sandy beach facing the sunset, on a little hill looking out over the harbor… People bring them out in motorboats to their favorite spot to make their Saturday night cookout comfortable, and we just borrow them for a while…

My favourite lunch stop was along the coast of San Juan Island last summer. We cooked a warm lunch with our little stoves because it was sharply cold for a summer day. But just as we finished, the sun came out and started to warm us up. We weren’t in a hurry to go anywhere, so we made nests for ourselves in the round pebble beach and used our PFDs as pillows. The whole world just seemed to be at peace. Of course, it was just our little corner of the world that was. But our bellies were full and the sun was finally taking an edge off the cold day. I’ll always remember that best kayaking lunch. Thanks for sharing the great photos, you two.

We pick a calm spot and so (usually) don’t have to hang on, and so (usually) have both hands to eat with :-)
