Amaryllis Redux

By Vladimir Brezina

A month ago, our Amaryllis stirred to life. Day by day, it extended further a slender green flower stalk and eventually unfolded at the end of it three huge red flowers. But their time of glory was brief. When they had shriveled, we cut off the stalk and thought that the show was over for this year.

So we were amazed to find, growing out of the bulb some days later, not just a couple of green leaves but another flower stalk, which has now brought forth another two beautiful flowers—

  5. What is there like the intense scarlet of an amaryllis? Not much!
    These “bonuses” are stunners.

  7. The photo is beautiful, but the story makes it even better; you think that something is over and then this happens. Way-hay!

  8. I wonder how many flowers of this type there are in Amarillo (which with a capital letter is a city in the Texas Panhandle, and with a lower-case letter is the Spanish word for yellow).

    • That seems like a question that you are ideally positioned to answer—we expect a full report! ;-)

Reading your comment, I began to wonder whether the name Amaryllis does indeed derive from “yellow”. But no. According to Wikipedia, “The name Amaryllis is taken from a shepherdess in Virgil’s pastoral Eclogues, from the Greek ἀμαρύσσω (amarysso), meaning ‘to sparkle’.”

(However, our Amaryllis—and all others that are sold around here—is actually Hippeastrum.)
