This week’s Photo Challenge is The Sign Says.
On May 20, 2011, during our multi-day paddle down the Hudson River from Albany to New York City, we landed in the town of Highland for a meal in a riverside restaurant. And we saw this sign, promising Judgment Day for tomorrow. D
It sure looked like our trip would enter some seriously uncharted waters. Nevertheless, we kept paddling, and made it through May 21 without incident. We later learned that Judgment Day had been postponed until October 21, and then it was abandoned altogether…
P.S. Some people have read the bottom line of this sign as “Ediblefellowship.com”, suggesting quite another set of possibilities…
(A second interpretation of “The Sign Says” is here.)

Laugh out loud, as Jesus said, no one but God the Father knows when the end will come, not even Jesus himself. Yet, many televangelists and other fundamentalist preachers insist on predicting the date.

Great photo! I remember that prediction, Vlad; it was radio evangelist Harold Camping. People who believed him sold their homes and possessions; it was a big mess. Here’s a link to the story on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_end_times_prediction

Haha! At least you gotta give them credit for spelling ‘judgment’ correctly!

Well, it’s their stock-in-trade ;-)
But actually opinions on the proper spelling of judgment / judgement differ—one of those words over which there is continual low-level warfare…

Signs announcing the end of times have been around forever, I guess the actual date is a moving target. I remember a sign carrier (who scared the **/& of me) when I was about 10 years old back in Panama; at the time I took him seriously, then realized… he changed the date every year. LOL
The end of time comes to us when we close our eyes for the last time.

Yes, I’ve seen quite a few of them myself, before this one. NYC is very popular with prophets announcing the end of times… :-)

For some reason the sign puts me in mind of the apocryphal (!) Englishman who wrote to The Times asking how soon after Armageddon public services would be restored —

interesting post. Made me think of those folks out west who some charismatic person was able to convince to put on their red sneakers and take some poison when one of those 100 year comets passed by …

I didn’t hear about that one, but things like that happen often. Jonestown was only the most famous one…
