Last night we had a minor bit of fun awaiting the “super” Supermoon.
We looked up the time of moonrise—8:40 PM, just after sunset. And we looked up the direction in which the Moon should appear at moonrise—115 degrees true. This number was very pleasing, since it happens to be more or less the direction in which our apartment looks out over the East River.
But our view of the horizon is by no means complete. There are quite a few tall buildings around ours that block the view. Would the moon rise behind one of these, or in a gap between them? I suppose we could have gotten out the compass… But we preferred to wait and be surprised.
And there is was! It appeared in one of the gaps.
Astronomical predictions are wonderful, but you also need luck…

No Problem! Those are great images, especially the first one. Some of the best photos are snapshots .I guess Its about capturing a moment versus staging one, maybe?

I hear what you say about capturing the moment versus staging one. And sometimes snapshots do turn out very well (I think my Coney Island Mermaid Parade shots did). But at other times technical issues dominate—and photographing the moon might be one of those times…

Good point! Since digital photography made it’s big splash, though I personally find I have less and less interest in the technical side of image capture, and have adopted a point and shoot ethos. I used to love manipulating image variables on film, endlessly adjusting aperture, shutter speed, exposure length etc. I found the endless variations and processes to be quite fascinating and magical but with the immediacy of digital i find it easier to retake until the desired results are attained or where such is not possible, to fix minor faults in post production (editing software)

Those variables like aperture, shutter speed, exposure length haven’t gone away—they still impact the picture in exactly the same way they did before, and you still have to get them right! What digital allows you to do is to experiment with them without appreciable cost. So in a way it allows you to become more immersed in the technical aspects of things, if you choose to be. And beyond that, it allows you even more technical manipulations that film never could, such as HDR. It’s now all too easy to go overboard with those, in fact… :-)

Beautiful photos and a great vieuw from your appartment :) ! I know the problem, when you want to get a photo of the moon or sun and there are some buildings or trees in front :? , but in NY it must be surely more difficult.
The moon between the houses and with clouds has a special kind of charme, hasn’t it ;) !? LG Anja

Missed out on the Supermoon this year :/ I was in a plane most of the day (actually following daylight, going from Europe to the US) and when I landed in the US, rain, bad weather and jetlag prevented me from getting out for a couple of moon shots…

Next time! Supermoons come pretty often, and in any case they are not all that much bigger than ordinary full moons…
