This week’s Photo Challenge is The Golden Hour.
When I saw this week’s theme, I thought, how timely! For today (and tomorrow) is the second round of this year’s Manhattanhenge, the culmination of a very special golden hour in Manhattan. (Here are the photos from the first round of Manhattanhenge in May, and from 2011.) And I was going to urge all New Yorkers reading this post to go and see it. And even-out-of towners—you’ve still got a few hours to get on that plane so as to be in Manhattan by 8: 23 PM EDT ;-)
Unfortunately, a solid overcast, with occasional showers and thunderstorms, is forecast for both today and tomorrow. Indeed, as I write this, the rain is already beginning.
It will be a wash.
So, instead, here is another golden hour that I remember fondly.
It was last summer, during our kayak circumnavigation of Long Island. We were camped at the easternmost point of Long Island, at Montauk, in a grove of trees that faced the rising sun. The light that flooded our camp that morning was truly golden. And equally golden was the extra hour of sleep that we allowed ourselves that morning after our exertions of the day before…

My family and I did take advantage of a long lay over at JFK and took a car into Manhattan earlier this week. We experienced one of those steamy down pours but unfortunately missed the opportunity to view the stunning sunset you portray here. It was a fun trip though!

Manhattan always has something to offer! But it would have been too early for Manhattanhenge proper, which strictly happens on only one day each time. Still, you would have gotten an idea of what it’s like, if it hadn’t been raining. Next time! :-)

Thanks!! During this trip, I only had my waterproof cameras with me—I think these were all taken with a Pentax Optio W90. I was just wandering around our campsite at sunrise, then inside the tent… Nothing very special :-)

Oh, that’s YOUR tent, Jeff! Was wondering where it came from … :-). Sadly, it seems to have sprung a leak, so it is soon to become an ex-tent.

Thank you very much! I just wish my brain was firing on all cylinders when I put it together. You may have noticed by now that I forgot to put all the holidays in there, oops! I’ve been working on my 2014 calendar already, and won’t make that mistake again :-)
Too bad about the tent. Good ones aren’t cheap, I’ve been pricing lighter ones, and I’ve decided that the 20+ lbs I’ve recently lost more than makes up for the extra weight in my pack.

Fortunately with kayak camping the weight isn’t so much of an issue—until you have to pull the loaded kayak up a steep beach, that is! :-)

But usually the length of the beach doesn’t come into it. Usually we are sitting in our kayaks just offshore, and think that right here would be an idyllic spot to camp if we could only drag our boats up that steep bank…

Actually, that tent is already an ex-tent. I can’t even remember how old it was—at least twenty years. And on our last few trips we came to dread any thunderstorm, or even a modest shower, as we knew from abundant experience that it would soon be raining more inside the tent than out… We suffered stoically, but finally we had enough, and abandoned the tent at the end of our most recent trip through Florida. So now it’s presumably in some landfill in central Florida…. Sorry, Jeff!
Now we just have to remember to buy a new tent before our next trip ;-)

Yes, Johna already mentioned that. In fact my version is close to that old as well, and I’ve recently reacquired it from the person who bought it from my wife and I a long time ago. Still appears to be in great shape, and has so far kept the rain out. Though I really need to reseal the seams and treat the rain fly.
