Even in our urban and temperate part of the world—this is not the tropics!—it’s hard to miss the reminders that wild nature is just waiting for us to turn our backs to move in…
... kayaked the waters around New York for more than 15 years in his red Feathercraft folding kayak. He was originally from (the former) Czechoslovakia and lived in the U.K. and California before settling down in New York. He was a neuroscientist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He died in 2016.
... is a kayaker and technology researcher at Nemertes Research. She's an erstwhile engineer, particle physicist, and science fiction writer. She was born in California and has lived in Italy, Norway, Hawaii, and a few other places. She currently resides in New York City.

Wonderful pictures! I never would have guessed some of those were here in the states. Still trying to figure out what the photo is of the one in Athen’s N.Y. Mill? Floaty structures? Interesting pictures!

Those were old wooden barges or floating cranes of some kind, abandoned in a corner of the waterway for many years—and it doesn’t take that long for trees to start sprouting in the decaying wood…

Ospreys. They used to be rare around here, but have rebounded. People put up many osprey nesting platforms, and most of them are occupied—as are tall structures such as lights and navigation aids, such as this one, in the harbor :-)

You mean the cormorants in several of the pictures? Rather than the Canada Goose in picture #1, which has an even longer neck…

Cormorants ..RIGHT! Geese are prevalent but those necks are so distinctive!

Very common around here. It’s hard to pass pilings or a buoy in the harbor that does not have a few cormorants sitting on top :-)
