... kayaked the waters around New York for more than 15 years in his red Feathercraft folding kayak. He was originally from (the former) Czechoslovakia and lived in the U.K. and California before settling down in New York. He was a neuroscientist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He died in 2016.
... is a kayaker and technology researcher at Nemertes Research. She's an erstwhile engineer, particle physicist, and science fiction writer. She was born in California and has lived in Italy, Norway, Hawaii, and a few other places. She currently resides in New York City.

Not that I’m necessarily a pelican fan, but I do love these, especially the pelican that is about to land with wings and feet spread in anticipation.

I used to think that pelicans were a little scary-looking—as many readers have remarked, like dinosaurs sizing you up for a meal—but now that I look at these photos again, they look almost friendly :-)

I love Pelicans. I am from St. Petersburg…used to feed Pelicans at the old Pier, and of course see them all around the Bay while water skiing. When I was a kid they had a over-40 baseball league in Florida and St.Pete’s name was the Pelicans.

Pelicans are everywhere down there! I just love the way they coexist with people… even better than great blue herons do—but that is another post! ;-)

Pelicans always make me laugh. They are so klutzy until they get into the air and then they are masters of the wind. And the fish.

What fantastic photos! Pelicans 8 has a fine art feel and reminded me straight away of images of pelicans sculpted by unnamed medieval stone masons found in churches. We have some examples here in East Anglia, UK.
On a more prosaic note could I ask what type of lens you used?

Telephoto zoom—this one—probably at around 300mm in many cases. Although these particular pelicans let me get in really close…

Actually, it’s by no means the most expensive lens :-(
And I am not sure I would recommend this particular one. For one thing, it doesn’t perform all that well in low light. It’s just the lens that was available when I dropped the one I had previously and had to replace it at very short notice…
