A month ago I submitted, at the last minute, my entry for Travel Supermarket’s 2013 Capture the Colour competition—five photos that best captured the colors red, blue, green, yellow and white.
The results are out, and my Yellow photo, although it did not win, did, quite unexpectedly, make it into the top three!
That’s an improvement over the year before, when my Green photo only made it into the top eleven. So things are moving in the right direction. ;-)
Do take a look at the winners of this year’s competition—some of them are quite lovely!
Excellent. After failing to place at all last year, I decided against it this year. Which is a lie as I didn’t even know it was on hehe. Well done

Thanks, Al! I almost didn’t enter either—it’s obviously a hit or miss affair—but then I was nominated at the last minute, and I thought, why not…

Yeah That’s what I thought last year, but didn’t get anywhere. Maybe I will try next year

This is absolutely stunning… Im just amazed it didn’t win 1st!! :)

You really can’t expect that. Once you have several hundred good photos competing, the winner will largely depend on the judge’s subjective preferences… :-)

I love this yellow photo. Seems much better than the winning yellow, to me.

Well, yes… the winning yellow didn’t have all that much yellow in it, it looked more green to me ;-)
Thanks, Randee!!

My mistake—I was thinking of the other “honourable yellow mention”, not the yellow winner. The yellow winner is actually pretty nice.

Was it the flower with the ladybug on it? Because that had a lot of different colors in it.
LikeLike
Yes, the flower with the bug was the winner.

Well, I disagree. I think that one has too many colors to really even be entered.

Thanks!! (But actually control over the photo was almost totally out of my hands—just a matter of looking out of the window at the right moment…)

Take the credit! It was not a drone taking that photo through aerial surveillance and there were perhaps thousands of others who saw this and didn’t even think to capture the moment.

Thousands of others? I sincerely hope not, since this was taken from the window of our apartment… But I certainly take the credit for getting up that early in the morning! ;-)

LOL, I meant the sunrise – not your apartment specific composition. UNLESS there is an all night party that I am not invited too.

You’ll be invited next time! Although getting thousands of people into this apartment will be interesting… :-)

Good job. Your photo is lovely. Photography is hard because so many people are pretty good at it, Digital photos are everywhere, and art is so subjective. It’s hard to develop a thick skin as far as contests go, but what you do realize is how talented people are.

Yes, photography (especially digital photography) is superficially easy—many people who actually wanted to paint took up photography when they discovered they couldn’t draw—but the more you look at photographs the more you realize that some photographers are much better than others (and not just technically), and have their individual, distinct styles…
As far as contests go, you’ve got nothing to lose… although you do have to check the fine print to see what exactly you are allowing them to do with your photo ;-)

Yes, that is true, and it is true in art as well. I saw a huge canvas in a Paris art museum that was painted entirely with royal blue paint – not nuances or anything. Now why that was there baffled me, and still does. To me anyone could do that, but most people wouldn’t because who would take it. Obviously this artist had a name. He must have had an off day or something. It did make you talk and laugh, but artistic???? I don’t think so! But you never know why people choose the things they do. I’m glad yours got chosen. I do think it’s wonderful, and I’m glad you had the courage to enter! :)
