Weekly Photo Challenge: Grand

By Vladimir Brezina

This week’s Photo Challenge is Grand.

To face the elements is, to be sure, no light matter when the sea is in its grandest mood. You must then know the sea, and know that you know it, and not forget that it was made to be sailed over.

— Joshua Slocum, Sailing Alone Around the World

Even in our little kayaks, in a passing little storm, we occasionally glimpse something of what Slocum meant.

  9. GLORIOUS! Surely these weren’t all taken from a kayak ??? – it’s not as if the sea is … erhmm … smooth … I mean, there’s always a swell …

    • Most certainly, these (and many others on this blog) were taken from a kayak.

Yes, the kayak is usually moving in the waves. And that’s why I prefer a more stable boat, at least one in which you don’t have to have your paddle in your hand all the time to brace, so that you can take pictures instead. And the movement does degrade the sharpness of the image, but usually only with a telephoto lens or in low light…

  11. Beautiful ocean sky shots Vlad….the 4th and 3rd from last are especially appealing to me….but all are lovely. The way the sun spills light out over the ocean continues to mesmerise and enchant me….I love taking ocean shots, but I’m usually on dryish land!

    • Being on the water itself actually makes a big difference in the feeling (if not necessarily the photos), especially, when the circumstances are right, this Grand feeling—you feel that you are part of the scene rather than just watching it ;-) Of course, being in a kayak over which the waves are washing every few seconds helps in that regard…

  12. Looks like so much fun. I’ve kayaked on the Mississippi river, but I prefer a canoe.
All photos are beautiful, but the second from the bottom is my favorite.

  18. I love kayaking because of the beauty that surrounds me as I meander along a river. The energy in the air must have been terrific. Great Series of photos.
