... kayaked the waters around New York for more than 15 years in his red Feathercraft folding kayak. He was originally from (the former) Czechoslovakia and lived in the U.K. and California before settling down in New York. He was a neuroscientist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He died in 2016.
... is a kayaker and technology researcher at Nemertes Research. She's an erstwhile engineer, particle physicist, and science fiction writer. She was born in California and has lived in Italy, Norway, Hawaii, and a few other places. She currently resides in New York City.

Last summer I was amazed to see pelicans flying up and down the beach in Rehoboth, Maryland–I didn’t know they came that far north. Who knows, maybe we’ll see them perching on pilings in the Hudson River one of these days!

I’ve heard of them as far north as New Jersey, and some range maps show them even north of New York, although very rare there. So yes, it might well happen! After all, we’ve had manatees up on Cape Cod…

On the Gulf Coast of Florida (most of these photos were taken in the Tampa area) they are extremely accustomed to people—you can often walk right up to them…

When we ride the motorcycle along the coast by Malibu, I often see flights of pelicans. They are magnificent in flight.

And then they dive headlong into the water with a huge splash, surface, and look around innocently, pretending nothing had happened… you never know whether they got the fish or not :-)

What tele lense you used for this lovely pics?

Nothing special—just a generic zoom lens out to 300mm. The key is getting really close to your subjects…
