I have been wondering why the fisherman left it open. He must have known what was going to happen…

That last one’s hilarious, the lazy bird’s way of fishing. We have some of these guys around here but they’d never let anyone get that close.

We’ve had some experience with that on our camping trips in the last few months—herons, vultures, crows, raccoons…

I usually don’t see herons so close to people. Maybe they’re a little shier up here in new England. Great shots.

Yes, they (and many other types of birds) are unusually tame in Florida. Maybe tame isn’t quite the word for it. They keep an eye out, and will not let a human get closer than a certain distance, but they’ve learned that that distance can safely be very close…

Fun shots!

I wonder if he opened the cooler himself. Raccoons do it all the time, so why not a great blue heron?

The fishermen don’t chase them away, and even feed them scraps now and again—so the birds are well trained…

Great blue herons are such spectacular birds and great fishers. I’ve never been as close as you were as in my neck o’ the woods they are quite shy. We have a creek behind our house and when I walk our pooch in the early morning I often see one in the stalking breakfast. Your photos are really charming!

In Florida, where these photos were taken, the birds live in pretty close proximity to people, and clearly they’ve learned how to use that to their best advantage :-)
