Ailsa’s travel-themed photo challenge this week is Endearing.
I know people are expecting photos of cute babies and furry animals, but I love my invertebrates…
… cautious conch
… feisty fiddler crab

Too bad we didn’t get a photo of the crab who traveled home in my kayak from Sandy Hook last night! He was cute (except when he was wriggling around in the cockpit, which wasn’t EXACTLY endearing…)

He certainly enlivened our paddle back! ;-)

You and their mothers are probably equally fond. :)I agree with you they are beautiful, but I am not sure I would want to get up close and personal with any of them. Mind you, the same would apply to tigers.

That’s why telephoto lenses were invented…
I thought about including the bit about mothers in the post, but I knew I could rely on our readers to supply it. Thank you, Isobel! :-)

I know. I’ve been waiting and waiting for Ailsa to select “Comical” as her weekly theme, but it just wasn’t happening…

Definitely the conch! I had no idea what was inside of that shell.

Most people don’t, and when they find out, they are relieved that it’s actually quite endearing ;-)

The conch looks a little drunk – wobbly eyed.

There’s a certain advantage in being able to point each of your eyes in a different direction :-)

The conch was my initial thought for this challenge, but then I didn’t want it to feel alone :-)

That conch is about the funniest face in nature I have ever seen. Great pictures :-)

Yes, I was sure that the conch was one invertebrate that would have no trouble at all in being thought endearing :-)

I never knew a crustacean could be so… Human.

And reflecting the human image in some way is what makes an animal endearing, isn’t it? I knew the conch, at least, would make it :-)

I opened your post with great trepidation. I was expecting arachnids. I’m glad I didn’t see any.

There are limits. I knew most readers would probably draw the line well short of spiders ;-)

Vlad, I appreciate your feelings, but you have really set me a challenge here. I like the shell though :)

But don’t empty conch shells now look kind of sad and forlorn?

Yes, that conch gets around. It couldn’t resist using it again for this challenge, but then thought to disguise it by adding two other endearing invertebrates :-)

I think the creature inside would probably say that he is the conch, and the shell is just his shell ;-)

Unfortunately true. But on this beach (St. Pete Beach), unusually, people were very aware of them, and even pointed out to us that they were protected and we shouldn’t disturb them :-)

Like most here, I was surprised at how endearing that little creature is. In your photo. Repeat. In your photo.
Left to my own devices, I wouldn’t have even have noticed him!

Oh, he (or she, or both, actually :-) ) made sure I noticed him (or her, etc.)! Quite the little exhibitionist! :-)
