I mean, of course, the ancient turn of the year, the Winter Solstice—not that newfangled, artificial New Year on January 1st.
The Winter Solstice occurs today, December 21st, at 6:03 PM EST (New York time). This year, especially, we look forward to the days finally getting longer…
… and we are still waiting for our first real snowstorm, which at least for a day or two makes everything brighter :-)

... kayaked the waters around New York for more than 15 years in his red Feathercraft folding kayak. He was originally from (the former) Czechoslovakia and lived in the U.K. and California before settling down in New York. He was a neuroscientist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He died in 2016.
... is a kayaker and technology researcher at Nemertes Research. She's an erstwhile engineer, particle physicist, and science fiction writer. She was born in California and has lived in Italy, Norway, Hawaii, and a few other places. She currently resides in New York City.

It’s interesting that the Winter Solstice and the December 25 date are basically pagan, upon which we have anchored our Christian celebration. When I lived in New York, the Solstice generally had more meaning than here in California. Enjoy happy holidays.
