This week’s Photo Challenge is Near and Far.
I’ve already posted one response to this challenge—three of my annual photos of a round-Manhattan swimmer next to my kayak with the Empire State Building in the distance.
A similar photo-op occurs in our kayaking trips through New York Harbor. We often paddle from Manhattan down to the Lower Bay for the day. As we return in the evening, we pass through the Verrazano Narrows and turn the corner into the Upper Bay. And there suddenly, across the entire Upper Bay, we see the ramparts of Manhattan in the evening sun. They are imposing, but still far, far away…
Swimmers, too, get to see that sight sometimes…
For more on “Paddling to Manhattan Island”, see here; for more on swimming there, see here and here.

I always tell Johna to paddle into the picture as foreground. She complains only some of the time ;-)

It must be hard to swim in that choppy water. Great pics.

It get a lot more choppy than that! The swimmers are not happy, but they expect it and up to a certain point can deal with it…

Este post está en inglés pero creo que las fotos no necesitan descripción. Son asombrosas especialmente la del nadador cerca de la boya.

Great photos, but I have to say I’m especially impressed by the swimmers. That’s no mean feat!

Indeed! It’s a world-class event, one of the three premier open-water swims in the world…

Breathtaking photos! It must be an awesome feeling to be kayaking so near NY. To be in the middle of a great nature experience and yet with a mega city right up. Gosh, I’m in total awe!!!

Actually, I think we look at it the other way round—we kayak in the city, and to see nature we have to paddle out just a bit ;-)
Thanks for following our blog! I’ve taken a look at yours, and you have some very lovely photos too… :-)

Wonderful choice of shots for the theme. Those shots, with city and the famous statue, give a perspective I’ve never had before. Super.
*disparagingly* I don’t think the swimmers really see it. They’re too busy breathing and stuff.

That’s what I always think, too—I am always mildly surprised when the swimmers can see my hand gestures, even though I am only a few feet away. On the other hand, they are surprisingly aware of the bridges they are swimming under and other landmarks along the course, and actually like to have them pointed out to them—probably anything to relieve the monotony! ;-) There is even one swimmer who carries a waterproof camera and takes snapshots as she swims…
