On Saturday, I was in the right place at the right time. A little rain shower gave way to a golden sunset over New Jersey, with golden reflections in Manhattan…
(At home afterwards, I stitched together a panorama in Photoshop. If I’d thought of it at the time, I would have made sure to take all the matching photos for it. Oh, well…)
… and then the World Trade Center tower glittering ahead in the purple dusk and the moon overhead…
... kayaked the waters around New York for more than 15 years in his red Feathercraft folding kayak. He was originally from (the former) Czechoslovakia and lived in the U.K. and California before settling down in New York. He was a neuroscientist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He died in 2016.
... is a kayaker and technology researcher at Nemertes Research. She's an erstwhile engineer, particle physicist, and science fiction writer. She was born in California and has lived in Italy, Norway, Hawaii, and a few other places. She currently resides in New York City.

I sailed during the day, and then afterwards I just sat on the dock with a couple of friends, watching the sunset & talking until we got cold. Lovely last day of summer.

I put it in now and again—sometimes indeed it’s hard to avoid—to remind people, and because I like it too. But actually it’s discouraged in serious kayaking photography because of overuse—out on the wide water, the kayak photographer is desperate for some foreground, and most of the time the bow of the kayak is all there is…

Yes, if it is given adequate raw material, Photoshop usually does a pretty good job with the stitching. But cropping the panorama into a regular rectangle can remove too many of the interesting bits that stick out beyond it, so it’s best to take a much wider field of view if the photos are to be stitched together…
