He was originally from (the former) Czechoslovakia and lived in the U.K. and California before settling down in New York. He was a neuroscientist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He died in 2016.Johna Till Johnson

It’s probably a ring-billed gull: see comment above.
Yes, the red circle looks suspicious, but I certainly did not add it! Many gulls (and other birds) have rings around their eyes, which definitely make the predators among them, such as this one, more scary-looking… :-)

Not snow—just white feathers (see the photo of the complete bird in the comment above), and zooming in on the red-ringed eye. It helps to have a telephoto lens…
