About

We decided to name the blog “Wind Against Current” because we’re both fascinated by the effect of opposing forces. When you’re paddling, having the wind and current in opposition often creates what kayakers euphemistically call “interesting” conditions. In particular, if you’re paddling with the current and against the wind (one of Johna’s favorite scenarios)  you may experience surprisingly large waves.

More broadly, in both science and engineering, opposing forces lie behind many  interesting situations. Opposing forces create both colloidal suspensions and turbulence, airplane flight and its instabilities, heart rhythms and arrhythmias… And if you want to get metaphysical, many philosophies feature the notion of opposing forces of light and darkness, yin and yang, good and evil.

So we decided to create a space in which we could explore, with friends, the many ways in which opposing forces shape our world.

We invite you to join the discussion. We’re moderating comments for all the usual reasons,  but we’ll never delete a post (even if we find it objectionable) without letting you know.

We look forward to hearing from you!

  13. Hi Vladimir!

I’m glad you liked my Weekly Photo Challenge post on “Reflections” http://stockholmserendipity.wordpress.com/2014/03/24/weekly-photo-challenge-reflections/ Hope you drop by my blog now and then to see what I’m up too.

We must have met without knowing it, on at least one of the many times I used to kayak around in the Hudson close to 79th st were one can borrow a kayak for 20 minutes for free. I’m not a pro, but used to enjoy paddling around in the sun, when I lived in NYC :-) I look forward to following Wind Against Current!

    Cheers,

    • Thanks for visiting, Helen, and for following our blog! Welcome!!

You’ll certainly get plenty of kayaking stories here—but, as I am sure you are aware, reading about it never really replaces proper instruction, and then lots of practice! :-)

  28. Fascinating post vladimir on your range of interests in addition to your vocation as a medico…the video clip on starlings is just beautiful with the large flock weaving patterns across horizon and waters like lusty casting of nets by some invisible fishermen…other than motor launches, my foray into boating is limited to trying out pedal boats on placid lakes and thus can visualize the thrill of kayaking on the sea, grappling with wind and currents…season’s greetings and best wishes…Raj .
