We passed the September Equinox earlier today—and so, Happy Fall, everyone!
(Or of course, in the Southern hemisphere, Happy Spring!)

I mean, of course, the ancient turn of the year, the Winter Solstice—not that newfangled, artificial New Year on January 1st.
The Winter Solstice occurs today, December 21st, at 6:03 PM EST (New York time). This year, especially, we look forward to the days finally getting longer…
… and we are still waiting for our first real snowstorm, which at least for a day or two makes everything brighter :-)

So, Happy Spring! (Or, to our readers in the Southern Hemisphere, Happy Autumn!)

The Vernal Equinox just occurred a few minutes ago—and so, Happy Spring!
… to those in the Northern Hemisphere, of course. And to those in the Southern Hemisphere, Happy Autumn!

This morning at 12:30 a.m. EST, as most of us on the East Coast slumbered, we passed the winter solstice. So from now on, days will be getting longer! On the other hand, winter is here. And it’s predicted to be cold and snowy.
In anticipation, here are some photos from last winter, taken on January 27, 2011, in New York City’s Central Park just after the nor’easter that dumped a record 19 inches of snow there…
More photos from that day are here.
