Freshly Pressed on the WordPress.com home page!

We made it! Ten days, including a final “double day”—instead of camping, we paddled overnight to get home just as dawn was breaking.

We are completely amazed by the diverse beauty of Long Island. We hadn’t previously realized how lovely it is—we know better now!

A full writeup is to come… but meantime, here are a few photos (move pointer over them for brief captions, click to enlarge). Many more photos to come!

Update July 11, 2012: The first of the series of full writeups is here.

    • Thanks, John! I was just this morning over at your blog—recommended by maidstonejewelry, above—and I just love your photos! Now that we’ve actually seen eastern Long Island, some of your images really resonate. The writing is very nice as well—altogether a lovely blog. Will keep coming back often…

    • We had to paddle around the whole of Long Island to truly appreciate it ;-)

“…but whereto does all that circumnavigation conduct? Only through numberless perils to the very point whence we started.”

  13. Sweet trip. I love the idea of taking on a long term goal like this. To plan and workout all the things that go into it, but then ultimately it comes down to just doing it. Normally I might say, “to put one foot in front of the other” but in your case I guess it would be more appropriate to say, “one paddle stroke in front of the other.” The excitement of a journey like this can be overwhelming. Good job, and good luck on your next journey.

  25. beautiful photos, it looks like you paddled through a storm at some point

    • Yes, several storms, including one dramatic one just as we were rounding Montauk Point, the easternmost point of our trip—photos to come, on Day 5…

      • Curious, which place have you kayaked with the most changeable open water weather?

        Like

        • We haven’t kayaked (yet) in the places where one would expect changeable weather (Britain, for example)…

But having said that, most places have pretty settled weather, or at least predictable weather, much of the time—but then, layered on top of those long-term weather patterns—much more rapidly changing phenomena such as thunderstorms. That’s obviously true in the tropics, but it’s true even around NYC. So the weather can be predicted fairly well, it isn’t changing much for most of the day, but then when a thunderstorm hits the conditions change by the minute, even by the second. It happens on many days in the New York summer…
