The popular paddling site Paddling.net runs a Photo of the Week contest. Over the past couple of years, I’ve submitted a few of my photos. The first three photos that were successful were here. Now here are three more winners.

Sailing my kayak with Balogh Batwing sail and BOSS outriggers on Long Island Sound. Sail is double-reefed in a 25-kt wind. Photo was taken by camera mounted at the top of the mast.
The one with a view from the Hudson is terrific! Nice photos :)

Congratulations. Fabulous photos and very worthy winners! I’d never seen a sail attached to a kayak before, brilliant. :-)

Putting a sail on a kayak is not really common, but neither is it all that unusual. And there are many kayak sail rigs to choose from—I wrote a bit about it here.

the top picture is brilliant – must enable some speed and stability

Yes, this a pretty heavy-duty sail rig, and with the outriggers you can go fast even in strong winds without capsizing. I wrote a bit about my kayak-sailing experience here, here, and here.

ah, they are all lovely, but that final one…. who could ask for more than such a perfect ending to an amazing day?!!!

They’re all great, Vlad, but I love the one from the mast – such an unusual POV.

Yes… the camera automatically took photos every 5 or 10 minutes, and then I had to sort through hundreds of almost identical photos with me in slightly different poses… :-) Actually, now that I think about it, it could make an interesting time-lapse movie…

Vladimir, it’s ironic, but they initially got us mixed up. They had the caption for one of my fall photos attached to your stunning sunset picture and attributed it to me. I didn’t know it until now, but when I saw the photo I was sure it was one of yours. I’m not at all disappointed. My fall picture was rather dull and compared to yours. Congratulations.

Keep sending them in! I think a lot of yours (e.g. from your latest sea lion trip) are just what they are looking for!

Congratulations! I always enjoy your photos because they’re taken from a kayak, a different perspective for me. BTW, the “Batwing” setup looks so cool! Must be a lot of fun. :)

Thanks, Beth! Yes, sailing a kayak with this kind of rig is definitely a lot of fun—when there is wind! Otherwise, you are paddling a sailboat…
