Yesterday in the early evening a line of strong thunderstorms rumbled through New York City. This happens often in the summer and the sight can be awe-inspiring. But I was working all afternoon in a windowless room, and later, when I got to a window, it was too late to discern much. The building was already submerged in thick green fog. Lightning flashed and thunder cracked directly overhead.
What to do under those circumstances? Let’s go to the video replay!
And from where better to observe the arrival of the storm over New York Harbor and the Manhattan skyline than the Statue of Liberty?
In 2011, on the occasion of the Statue’s 125th birthday, EarthCam installed several webcams on top of the Statue. There is, in particular, HarborCam, which looks out toward Manhattan. And there is LibertyCam, which looks at the Statue from across the water in Brooklyn.
These two cams can not only be viewed live, but they store the video stream from the previous 24 hours. You can replay the previous day!
So, here are the highlights of yesterday—the colorful dawn, sunrise, boats criss-crossing the harbor during the day, the arrival of the storm, and then, just before sunset, the sun breaking through the clouds behind the Statue of Liberty and lighting up the towers of Manhattan…

The sun came out, but it’s not over yet! Hurricane Arthur is making his way up the East Coast of the US, to arrive off NYC just in time to join in the festivities of the Fourth of July…

Thank you so much for capturing this! We had the gilded sky in Philadelphia at around 8:20 PM as well. It was bewitching – a stream of brilliance bursting through after a short(ish) show of rain and lightning.

That seems to happen quite often in the summer—a thunderstorm in the late afternoon or early evening, with the sun reappearing just before sunset… One of the most spectacular days like that that we’ve experiences, from our kayaks furthermore, is here.

Actually a lot of those boats were working boats—ferries, tugs, barges—with a number of people slaving away in windowless hot engine rooms ;-)

We get to see some real fireworks from Mother Nature! The Boston 4th of July is on right now. Arthur (ghost of Arthur Fiedler?) made them reschedule. 100,000 people seem to have shown up anyway :-)
