Travel Theme: Pink, Take Two

By Vladimir Brezina

Ailsa’s travel-themed photo challenge this week is Pink.

There’s one week in the year, coming up soon, when NYC’s parks are awash in pink. And looking further ahead, here’s another classic NYC event in which pink is surely the ruling color—

It’s the Coney Island Mermaid Parade! The story and photos from last year are here.

You can bet we’ll do our best to be there again this year! This year on Saturday, June 21st, at 1 PM.

Travel Theme: Pink

Ailsa’s travel-themed photo challenge this week is Pink.

In NYC’s Central Park not so long ago, pink was an artificial color.

But very soon now, it will grow on every tree—

These photos were taken in April 2013. Hopefully, a preview of coming attractions!

Another classic NYC event, later on in June, at which pink is surely the ruling color is here.

Spring, Finally, Perhaps…

By Vladimir Brezina

The Spring Equinox occurs today.

This year, Spring has been a long time in coming. In NYC, the weather is still very chilly. But there are signs that Winter is now, finally, perhaps, on its way out…

So, Happy Spring! (Or, to our readers in the Southern Hemisphere, Happy Autumn!)

Weekly Photo Challenge: Inside

By Vladimir Brezina

This week’s Photo Challenge is Inside.

Inside our home away from home, pitched on the tiny Magic Key in Estero Bay, FL, we catch a few hours’ sleep before another night of paddling during the 2014 WaterTribe Everglades Challenge

Travel Theme: Tempting

By Vladimir Brezina

Ailsa’s travel-themed photo challenge this week is Tempting.

Paddling down the Intracoastal Waterway near Sarasota, FL, during the first of our Everglades Shakedown paddles back in April 2013, we succumbed to the temptation of ice cream.

Perhaps this explained why we moved so slowly during that trip! So, during the Everglades Challenge itself, we removed all such temptation by paddling “outside”, through the Gulf.

And in a single day we traveled the distance that had previously taken us four days.

We Made It!!

Down the outside on the first day

We completed the 2014 WaterTribe Everglades Challenge in 7 days and about 14½ hours. We set no records—in fact, we were among the last to finish. But in a race in which many worthy competitors don’t finish, simply completing the course within the 8-day time limit felt like a “win”. (Plus, we got snazzy sharktooth necklaces to commemorate the event!)

As expected, it was quite an adventure: Bright sunshine, dark nights, wind, rain, laughter, tears, friendly and scary creatures, sleep deprivation, hypothermia, hallucinations… and water, 300 miles of it. We made friends and discovered many things that worked, and quite a few that didn’t.

Our writeup is forthcoming, but meanwhile, here are some of the photographic highlights (click on any photo to start slideshow):

Update March 17, 2014: Our writeup begins here.
