New York City overwhelms with its architecture, old and new, at ground level and high above. The photographer has to choose whether to capture the details of the architectural landscape or to portray the soaring verticals…

... kayaked the waters around New York for more than 15 years in his red Feathercraft folding kayak. He was originally from (the former) Czechoslovakia and lived in the U.K. and California before settling down in New York. He was a neuroscientist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He died in 2016.
... is a kayaker and technology researcher at Nemertes Research. She's an erstwhile engineer, particle physicist, and science fiction writer. She was born in California and has lived in Italy, Norway, Hawaii, and a few other places. She currently resides in New York City.

This example really shows the difference…the Vertical gives you the overwhelming skyscraper feel…

It’s a coincidence that I was showing photographs of a vine in one vertical and one horizontal composition (though not in response to a challenge other than an internal one) while you were doing the same thing with a building.
It took me a long time to make the connection between the adjective vertical and the noun that it comes from, vertex, and between the adjective horizontal and the noun that it comes from, horizon.

Interesting, because in most examples I’ve seen (including my own) it’s clearcut which I have a preference for, and certainly what the difference is.
Here I do recognize the difference, but they are SO different I’m not comparing. Each IS on its own merits.

Not one of my favorite buildings either, although there are many worse now in Manhattan. I think in this case I was more attracted to the combination of different styles next to each other than to the particular building…
