  1. That looks nasty. Hope you are both at a safe place.

    • This time, we were off the water. But when we are paddling, getting off the water when a thunderstorm heads our way is easier said than done. Either we are far offshore, or it’s pretty clear that getting off the water wouldn’t solve much. We would just be cowering in the trees next to the water, not much safer and rapidly getting cold in the downpour… :-)

  3. Wow, that must have been quite a storm. We’ve had lightning with streaks of fire across the sky here, but they move too fast for me to photograph.

    • There were actually lightning bolts in that cloud…

The way to capture them is to let the lightning bolts come to you, rather than you going to them :-) Open up the shutter for a prolonged period (if necessary cutting down the light by some other means, such as filters) and hope that a lightning bolt will flash down in that period…

But I wasn’t set up to do that. I was at a party! :-)

  4. Beautiful captures! Your shelter from the storm looks very interesting! Must have quite the history! Safe travels.

    • It does indeed! From Wikipedia: “Rowe’s “Pink Lady” opened on January 16, 1928, with an extravagant party attended by the elite of Tampa and St. Petersburg. The hotel quickly became a favorite romping ground for the rich and famous of the Jazz Age including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Clarence Darrow, Al Capone, Lou Gehrig, and Franklin D. Roosevelt.”

  11. Fabulous. I remember flying back to NJ from TX to see my family, grumbling over the flight, and then I got to watch the sun set over the gulf, from the air. Fantastic. It made everything worth it.
