Happy Winter!

By Vladimir Brezina

Ailsa’s travel-themed photo challenge this week is Winter.

In NYC, meteorological Winter has been with us for quite some time. And with tomorrow’s Winter Solstice, astronomical Winter starts as well. But there is a silver lining—even though the coldest days are yet to come, from today the day length will steadily increase toward Spring…

In the meantime, Happy Winter!

However, for reasons that can’t be gainsaid, we are off to Florida for a week’s paddling, in regions that even WordPress cannot reach… Happy Holidays, and see y’all when we get back!

A Winter Manhattan Circumnavigation

By Vladimir Brezina

The calendar says that winter hasn’t started yet.

But what does the calendar know? Paddling-wise, it’s already deep winter here in the US Northeast. The days are short, and once the sun sets, the temperature plummets dramatically. It’s not the season for loitering on the water after dark, and even more so, for landing after dark, unavoidable as that often is. Putting away the boats in the dark, with wet fingers frozen by the cold wind, can be a distinctly unpleasant experience.

So, it’s the season for shorter trips suited to the shorter days—such as the old standby, the Manhattan circumnavigation.

Here are some photos from Saturday’s circumnavigation (click on any photo to start slideshow).

The individual photos are here.

Seals & Submarine

By Vladimir Brezina

Crossing Ambrose Channel

Last Saturday: Air temperature in the twenties (Fahrenheit) in the morning, struggling up into the thirties during the afternoon. Colder on the water, of course. Water temperature around forty-five degrees Fahrenheit. Definitely drysuit weather, with gloves or pogies a requirement (and hot tea!). Partly sunny, with increasing clouds. Moderate northerly wind, becoming southeasterly in the afternoon. Current indicating a trip to points south. A perfect day to visit, once again, the seals of Swinburne Island, with maybe the Yellow Submarine of Brooklyn thrown in!

In the event, we saw only two, perhaps three, seals (which kept their distance, so no good photos) at Swinburne Island—a similar low number as on our last trip a month ago, and as reported by other kayakers so far this winter. In previous years, we’ve always seen ten or more seals at Swinburne by this time in the season. A little worrying…

And, bizarrely, the Yellow Submarine seems to have gotten a fresh coat of yellow paint (and some fresh graffiti) recently! Compare

Weekly Photo Challenge: Let There Be Light, Take Three

By Vladimir Brezina

Oh, all right… I can’t resist having a third go at this week’s Photo Challenge, Let There Be Light! (The first two responses were here and here.)

Weekly Photo Challenge: Let There Be Light, Take Two

By Vladimir Brezina

This week’s Photo Challenge is Let There Be Light! Our first response was here, but here’s another, quite different take on the theme…

Little pools of light in the gathering darkness… The lamps come on in NYC’s Central Park on a snowy night.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Habit

By Vladimir Brezina

This week’s Photo Challenge is Habit.

Gus the polar bear was one of the stars of Manhattan’s Central Park Zoo. New Yorkers took to him probably because, as a result of being cooped up in the equivalent of a tiny apartment, he was a creature of neurotic, not to say compulsive habits, such as obsessive swimming. But, like a true New Yorker, he managed to thrive on his neuroses—he outlived both his younger female companions, and finally died this past summer, aged 27 (which is quite old for a polar bear).
