My first response showed massive objects on the move to a purposeful destination. So, by way of contrast, this post features ephemeral movement in frivolous circles… :-)

The weather is finally getting warmer, and the days longer. Time for one of our favorite paddles!
In yesterday’s variant of the trip, we paddled up the East River, through Hell Gate, and past Throgs Neck out into Long Island Sound, just in time for lunch at Sugar and Spice on City Island. Then back down the East River to Hell Gate, up the Harlem River, and finally down the Hudson River home.

We saw plenty of wildlife—dolphins, turtles, sharks, birds—last month in Florida. But no seals.
So yesterday we paddled down to Swinburne Island, where seals have never yet failed us, during the winter months. But spring is now, finally, upon us, with temperatures warming dramatically—time for the seals to return north, to their summer homes in Maine and Canada. We may have left it too late…
We paddled around Swinburne a couple of times, sat and scanned the water, waited expectantly… Nothing.
Then, just as we were about to leave, a lone seal head popped up.

Ailsa’s travel-themed photo challenge this week is Clean.
Many are incredulous that the waters around Manhattan are clean enough to swim in.
But it’s true.*
These are photos from the last three years of the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, a world-class, 28.5-mile swim around Manhattan, organized by NYC Swim every June or July. (Stories and more photos are here, here, and here.) This year on June 14, June 28, and July 12!
*Of course, you should still probably get your shots first ;-)

This was actually a paddle from Manhattan around Staten Island, past the Graveyard of Ships
and many still-living ships
back to Manhattan, still misty in the evening…

... kayaked the waters around New York for more than 15 years in his red Feathercraft folding kayak. He was originally from (the former) Czechoslovakia and lived in the U.K. and California before settling down in New York. He was a neuroscientist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He died in 2016.
... is a kayaker and technology researcher at Nemertes Research. She's an erstwhile engineer, particle physicist, and science fiction writer. She was born in California and has lived in Italy, Norway, Hawaii, and a few other places. She currently resides in New York City.
